a trip to NT Rufford Old Hall in Lancashire

June 27, 2014 By Rachael

We decided to celebrate our new National Trust membership with a trip out to Rufford Old Hall in Lancashire, which isn’t far from us.

rufford old hall lancashire

It’s a gorgeous place to go if you’re looking for a day out in the North West – there’s something for everyone, whether you’re a lover of history (the most amazing 16th century Old Hall complete with woodwork) or gardening (there’s 14 acres of garden which is beautifully maintained – I could have wandered around there all day) or cake. In typical National Trust fashion there is the most AMAZING cafe. The cakes are so good that a woman there told me they quite often pop over just for a treat (I’ve wondered before if National Trust membership is worth it as much for the cakes as for the culture…)

The 18th century cobbled courtyard has stables, an old piggery and a water pump (as well as the cafe, a shop and some plants for sale from the garden, too)

The Tudor patterned Hall was built in 1530 – you can’t take photos inside, so you’ll have to imagine how gorgeous it is (or visit) but it’s all intricately carved wood, complete with angels carved into the hammer beams. There’s a seven foot wide movable screen made of oak which weighs three tons. Back in 1580, William Shakespeare was reputed to have stayed there for six months.

The gardens are gorgeous. There’s a lovely nature trail for children, and in the woods there’s space for den building and heaps of wood and branches – we’ll definitely be back with the children soon.

If you’re thinking of a trip to Rufford Old Hall the opening times and directions are here. I went on a whim after a weekend which was busy and full of London and chaos and noise and people and it was just what I needed. More on that weekend in another post – suffice to say every time I speak at a conference I end up escaping to the green quiet of a garden, somewhere, very soon afterwards. It soothes my soul.

  • Tilly is closing her eyes and making a wish as Basset hounds aren’t allowed a vote. But you are (if you’re over eighteen) so don’t forget to use it. 🌹 #dogsatpollingstations #votelabour #southportlabour
  • I don’t know about your house, but it’s been quite full on round here between Christmas shopping, life stuff, the needs of teenagers, and the small matter of an election. So I took the executive decision to ignore my Things To Do list (and sang a little song of gratitude to past me, who’d put dinner in the slow cooker in the morning) and decided to have a go with my Lino cutting kit. It’s been thirty years since I did it last, and this was the result. Is it a tiny house with looming wooded mountains? Is it a forest full of creatures? Is it a thatched house with a garden full of trees? (Answers on a postcard...) Whatever it is, I had a lovely time not thinking about any of the million things that normally gallop about in my head, so I think I’ll call that a win.
  • I’ve had this song in my head for days now. If this election doesn’t matter to you - if you’re planning to vote for the Conservative party despite the 130,000 who have died because of austerity and despite teachers leaving the profession in their droves, and despite children lying on hospital floors on a pile of fucking coats - I genuinely don’t understand what you are thinking. I’ve sat for four hours on a drip on a plastic chair in the corridor of A&E. I’ve waited years for my children to be seen by consultants. I’ve watched people I love die of cancer because the NHS doesn’t have the money to fund treatments. We can make a difference on Thursday.
  • We’ve gone with a red theme for the Christmas tree this year.
I grew up in a house with a father who not only voted Conservative but who stood as a Tory councillor in an ex mining town in central Scotland. He believed that if you worked hard and paid your dues you’d be okay. The truth is that structural inequality means that unless you’re able bodied, straight, white, educated - it’s not that straightforward. You can’t get out of poverty if you can’t get a hand up. You can’t get well if the NHS you rely on is being run into the ground by people who have private healthcare. You can’t expect your children to do well at school when exhausted, overworked teachers are struggling to get by on a salary that hasn’t increased properly and in classrooms where their funding has dropped through the floor. The best Christmas present we could give the children who live in poverty this year is a Labour government. 🌹
  • The Telephone Box Library is out in just six weeks - I’ve just looked through the final pages that have gone off to print and I can’t wait for it to be out on the shelves! It’s a story about Lucy, a burnt out history teacher who takes a sabbatical in a little village. She gets caught up in village life, and makes friends with Sam and his teenage daughter Freya, and Bunty, the extremely feisty ninety-something woman who lives in the cottage next door. When the decision is made to turn the disused village telephone box into a free library, the secret of Bunty’s work during the Second World War and her connection to nearby Bletchley Park is revealed. It’s in the shops in early January - but if you have a moment to call or visit your local bookshop and order a copy, it makes all the difference! (Gorgeous cover by @sarah_mcmenemy)
  • Winter arrived in New York overnight and the trees - which had previously just started to contemplate changing colour - dropped all their leaves in surprise. Yesterday morning the streets were carpeted and the air was that clear, crisp cold that makes you feel properly alive. And now I’m sitting on a train on the way home to everyone and I can’t wait for my own bed and a nice cup of tea. Going away is lovely, but coming home is even nicer. I’ve got pages of notes for the next two books, and lots to think about...
  • Last view of Montana, taken from the airport in Bozeman. Now I’m sitting by the window listening to New York on a Saturday evening and thinking about how to take the peace of the mountains back home with me.
  • Swipe for my last Montana sunset. I think I’m leaving a bit of my heart here.
  • Good morning from Gardiner, Montana, where I appear to have stepped into an episode of Northern Exposure. This has been a week I’ll never forget, where I’ve seen and heard wolves, met friends, and eaten the most amazing food. Next stop is New York, where I’ll be celebrating the publication of We Met in December and meeting up with my best friend from university, who I haven’t seen for 23 years. I don’t expect there will be quite so many wandering deer there, mind you. 🦌
  • Little fox on a mission. 21 wolves spotted today - the biggest pack here in Yellowstone. Oh, and hanging out with them - a grizzly bear. Huge thanks to @wolftracker for making this week such a dream.
  • Nine wolves spotted today, from two different packs - and howls heard close by from the most elusive pack here in Yellowstone. It’s been another amazing day.
  • Here I am, windswept, sunburnt, squinting at the camera, and having the most amazing time at Mammoth Hot Springs. I love Yellowstone.
